Hellermann sleeving is used across theatre, live sound, broadcast and film for microphone rigging, cable protection, strain relief and discreet mic mounting. Available in different sizes and colours, Hellermann sleeves are commonly used to join lavalier microphones together as a backup, build ear hangers, secure mic cables and protect soldered joints without needing to apply heat.
Hellermann sleeving is used to grip, protect and secure small cables, microphones and delicate joints. In theatre and live sound, it is commonly used for lavalier microphone rigging, joining primary and backup mics, building custom ear hangers, securing cable runs and protecting soldered or repaired sections. It can also be used as an alternative to heat shrink where heat may damage nearby components.
Choose your Hellermann sleeve size based on the cable, microphone or joint you need to secure. Smaller sleeves are useful for lavalier microphones, fine cable work and discreet mic rigs, while larger sleeves are better for thicker cables or areas needing more protection. Colour is also important: pink, brown or beige-style tones can help blend with skin or costume, while black is useful for darker hair, black cables and general backstage use. For easier application, use a Hellermann sleeve tool with Hellerine lubricant to stretch the sleeve and slide it into position.
Common uses include joining lavalier microphones together for redundancy, building theatre mic ear hangers, securing DPA-style microphone cables, protecting soldered joints, adding strain relief, tidying small cable assemblies and creating discreet mic rigs for theatre, musicals, film, TV and live performance.
For a behind-the-scenes example, watch this video on how custom microphones are made for Hamilton, including the use of Hellermann sleeves in performer mic rigs.
Hellermann sleeving is used to secure, protect and grip small cables, microphones and joints. In theatre and live sound, it is commonly used for lavalier microphone rigging, joining backup mics, building ear hangers and protecting delicate soldered or repaired cable sections.
Hellermann sleeving is normally applied using a Hellermann sleeve tool. The sleeve is lubricated, stretched over the tool prongs, positioned over the cable or microphone, then slid off the tool into place. Hellerine lubricant helps the sleeve move smoothly onto the tool and over the cable.
The right size depends on the cable, microphone or joint you are working with. Smaller sleeves are better for lavalier microphones and fine mic cable work, while larger sleeves suit thicker cables or areas needing more protection. The sleeve should grip securely without being so tight that it is difficult to apply or so loose that the cable can move inside it.
Hellermann sleeving is useful when you need grip, protection or strain relief without applying heat. This makes it popular for delicate microphone work, lavalier cable rigging and theatre mic builds where heat could damage nearby components. Heat shrink is still useful for many cable jobs, but Hellermann sleeving is often preferred for flexible, discreet mic rigging.
