Shop professional LX tape for theatre, stage, film, TV and live event use. Available in a wide range of colours, widths and materials, LX tape is commonly used for cable identification, colour coding, marking positions, bundling cables and general backstage organisation. Choose from PVC electrical insulation tapes by Le Mark and Advance Tapes, alongside Paper-Tak PVC-free alternatives.
LX tape is a versatile coloured tape used by theatre technicians, electricians, stage crews, sound engineers and lighting teams. It is commonly used to identify cables and equipment, mark positions, group cable runs, label cases and organise backstage or production areas.
PVC LX tape can also provide electrical insulation when the product is correctly rated and used for a suitable application. It should not be relied on as the sole repair for badly damaged cables, exposed live wiring or permanent electrical connections.
Choose your LX tape based on its intended use, width, colour and material.
Standard 19mm PVC tape is the most versatile option for cable identification, colour coding and general backstage work. Narrower 12mm tape is useful for discreet marking and smaller cables, while wider 50mm tape gives greater coverage and visibility.
For electrical insulation, choose a properly rated PVC tape such as Advance AT7 and check the product specifications for flame retardancy, temperature resistance and suitability for the task. For non-electrical marking and labelling, Paper-Tak provides a PVC-free paper-based alternative.
For stage positioning and compact colour coding, the CRE8 Mini Non-Reflective Gaffer Rainbow Mix includes ten 12mm rolls in assorted colours. This narrow gaffer tape is also commonly known as spike tape and is ideal for marking performer positions, props, set pieces and equipment locations.
Common uses include colour coding sound, lighting and power cables, identifying cable ownership, marking stage positions, grouping cable runs, labelling equipment cases, organising touring stock, temporarily securing lightweight cables and creating visible backstage markers.
LX tape is widely used in theatres, venues, schools, film sets, TV studios, live events, touring productions, workshops and electrical maintenance environments.
LX tape is commonly used for colour coding, cable identification, stage marking, labelling equipment and general backstage organisation. In theatre and live event environments, different colours can help crews quickly identify cable types, departments, equipment ownership or specific cable runs.
LX is a theatre abbreviation for lighting and electrical. The term LX tape is commonly used by theatre and live event crews for coloured tape used in lighting, electrical, cable identification and general backstage work. Many LX tapes are PVC electrical insulation tapes, but you should always check the individual product specification before using one for electrical insulation.
A 19mm roll is the most versatile option for general theatre, stage and cable work. A 12mm tape is useful for smaller cables, discreet marking and compact equipment, while 50mm tape provides greater coverage and is easier to see from a distance. The best width depends on the cable size and how visible the marking needs to be.
The name comes from traditional theatre stage marking. Before tape was widely used, spikes or stakes were used to mark where performers, props and scenery should be positioned. When narrow strips of gaffer tape replaced these physical markers, theatre crews continued to call the marks “spikes.”
Today, narrow gaffer tape, typically around 12mm or half an inch wide, is commonly called spike tape and is used to mark actor positions, scenery, props and equipment locations on stage.
